the man who walked into the sea.

There was a man born of the ocean
Who lived upon the land
He walked among its people
And he joined them in their ways
Yet, his origins forgotten
He would stroll upon the sand
And search for what was missing
In the twilight’s final rays
They say, you can’t win if you don’t play
But it seemed to him that when he played too many times he lost
He thought there must be some way
To play a different game that didn’t have so high a cost
He only wanted to be free
Of the man society
Was insisting he should be
So he packed up his destiny
And solemnly walked into the sea

The people mourned his passing
All his friends and family
Sat in shocked miscomprehension
Upon hearing of his death
But little did they know
That as he sank into the sea
The man had come to find
He had lost the need for breath
As his eyes cleared he could soon see
His earthly burdens lost among the cycles of the tide
With his mind eased he could swim free
His innate aquatic instincts were awakening inside
He found that he had company
That there were others just like he
Who’d come in search of dignity
And formed a strong community
Of people who lived beneath the sea

He spent seven years in the city in the sea
Faded memories came back to him in waves
And he remembered who his parents were
And he remembered who he was

Then one day the city’s leader
Paid a visit to the man
And said, “The time has come to leave here
“Because now you understand
“The purpose you were given
“Back when all of this began
“So now you must return
“To the people of the land”
As his eyes cleared he could soon see
His earthly burdens lost among the cycles of the tide
With his mind eased he could swim free
His innate aquatic instincts would forever be his guide
He found that he had company
That there were others just like he
Who’d come in search of dignity
And formed a new community
Of people who walked out of the sea
